Buying a phone, watch or console second time around can be a smart high-end bargain — or an expensive guess. The label on the listing is where that risk starts. Used, pre-owned, second-hand and refurbished get swapped around online as if they mean the same thing. They do not.
This guide separates the words clearly, shows what a proper refurbisher should do before a device goes on sale, and gives you a short checklist so you can compare RebX Certified stock (or anyone else’s) without relying on hype.

What does “used” usually mean?
Used (or second-hand / pre-owned sold as-is) typically means the device is sold in the condition it left the previous owner. Someone may tell you it works. You find out properly when it arrives — and aftercare is often thin or missing.
Common gaps on used listings:
- No stated testing process (or a vague “checked and working”)
- No cosmetic grade that separates looks from function
- Little or no warranty
- Unclear returns if battery health or a port disappoints
- Unknown data wipe history
The upside is price. The trade-off is that you are pricing in uncertainty: battery wear, hidden faults, missing accessories, and whether anyone stands behind the sale.
What does “refurbished” mean when it is done properly?
Refurbished, done properly, means the device was inspected and tested to a stated standard, issues addressed where needed, cleaned, securely data-wiped, then graded for cosmetics and sold with a clear warranty and returns path.
That is a different product from “it powered on once on a kitchen table.”
A serious refurbisher should be able to explain, in plain English:
- What gets tested (display, touch, cameras, audio, connectivity, charging, and category-specific checks)
- How previous owner data is removed
- How cosmetics are graded (and that grade is not a function score)
- Whether battery performance is checked against a minimum before sale
- What warranty and returns actually cover
If a seller cannot answer those five, treat the word “refurbished” as marketing, not a process.
Used vs refurbished at a glance
| Used / as-is | Certified refurbished (done properly) | |
|---|---|---|
| Testing | Often informal or unstated | Structured functional checks before sale |
| Data wipe | Unknown | Should arrive reset, previous data removed |
| Cosmetics | “Looks fine” is vague | Clear grade bands (looks only) |
| Battery | Rarely standardised | Checked against a minimum standard |
| Warranty | Often none | Stated length and exclusions |
| Returns | Often limited | Clear change-of-mind / fault route |
| Price | Usually lowest | Lower than new; usually above raw used |
Price alone does not tell you which column you are in. Process does.
Why “refurbished” is not a regulated word
Here is the caveat every buyer needs: refurbished is not a tightly regulated label in the UK retail sense people assume. Two listings can say “refurbished” and mean very different levels of care.
That is why grades, testing detail, warranty length and returns matter more than the discount on the product card. A rock-bottom “refurb” with no process story is closer to used than to certified stock — even if the word on the page is the same.
What RebX Certified includes
At RebX, every Certified device follows a fixed path (full detail on The RebX Promise):
- Functional testing — power, display, touch, buttons, speakers, microphones, cameras, connectivity, charging and category-specific checks
- Secure data wipe — previous user data removed; factory reset before grading
- Cosmetic grading — screen, body and finish assessed so the listed grade matches what you open
- Battery health check — must meet our minimum before approval
- Professional clean and pack — then dispatch with RebX support behind the order
Every device also goes through our 90-point quality check before sale. That is the gap between “someone said it works” and RebX Certified.
We do not publish a single public battery percentage on every listing the way some specialists do — so if that exact number matters to you, ask before you buy, and check battery health in the device settings when it arrives.
Grades: looks, not function
At RebX, grades describe cosmetic condition only. Excellent, Very Good, Good and Fair are about how the device looks. Every grade is fully functional and tested.
That is how you trade a bit of cosmetic perfection for a lower price on the same model — useful when you want flagship hardware without paying new prices. If you use a case and screen protector, stepping down a grade is often the smart high-end bargain; the marks are largely covered and the device still passed the same functional bar.
For the full grade table and shopping advice, see our guide to RebX refurbished grades. Exact scratch-and-scuff criteria live on the grading & warranty page.
Warranty by grade: Fair includes a 6-month warranty; Good, Very Good and Excellent include 12 months. That is the main policy difference to weigh when Fair looks tempting on price.
Warranty, returns and free delivery
This is what separates certified refurbished from a gamble.
At RebX:
- 12-month warranty on Good, Very Good and Excellent (Fair: 6 months)
- 30-day no-quibble returns on orders
- Free delivery on orders
- Warranty covers manufacturer defects and hardware faults; it does not cover accidental damage, water damage, misuse, unauthorised repairs, cosmetic wear, or normal battery ageing over time (full exclusions on the grading & warranty page)
Before you buy from any seller — RebX or elsewhere — check two things: how long the warranty lasts and what it excludes, then how long you have to change your mind.
Checklist before you buy
Use this whether you are buying from RebX or comparing a marketplace used listing.
- The word on the listing — Used/as-is, or refurbished with a named process?
- Testing story — Can the seller describe what was checked, in plain language?
- Grade — Cosmetics only, or mixed into a vague “condition” score?
- Battery — Is there a minimum standard, or silence?
- Data wipe — Will it arrive reset, not mid-someone-else’s account?
- Warranty length — Especially if a cheaper cosmetic band shortens cover (as Fair does at RebX).
- Returns window — Change-of-mind and faulty-device routes both matter.
- Software support — An older flagship is only a bargain if updates still last long enough for you.
Bottom line
Used is often as-is: lower upfront cost, higher uncertainty. Refurbished, done properly, means tested function, graded cosmetics, a data wipe, and aftercare you can actually use.
At RebX that process is RebX Certified — functional testing, secure wipe, cosmetic grades, battery check, clean and pack, summarised as a 90-point quality check — with Fair at 6 months’ warranty and other grades at 12 months, plus 30-day returns and free delivery.
If a listing cannot explain its process, the cheaper price is usually priced for a reason.

Frequently asked questions
Is refurbished the same as second-hand / used? No. Used is often sold as-is, with little testing or aftercare. Refurbished, done properly, means tested to a stated standard, graded for cosmetics, and sold with warranty and returns — the RebX Certified path above.
Does a lower grade mean the device works worse? No. At RebX, lower grades show more wear. They still go through functional checks before sale.
Why is Fair’s warranty shorter? Fair includes 6 months’ warranty; other grades include 12 months. Factor that in when Fair is the lowest price on a model you want.
What is RebX Certified? It means the device passed our inspection process — functional testing, data wipe, cosmetic grading, battery check, clean and pack — summarised as a 90-point quality check before sale. See The RebX Promise.
What if I am not happy after it arrives? RebX orders include a 30-day no-quibble returns window. Check the order confirmation and site policies for how to start a return.
